Our Mission

The Structures and Materials Laboratory at the University of Miami is dedicated to conduct applied and fundamental research through the testing/analysis of construction materials & structural systems. 

Our research focuses on the innovation of resilient approaches to promote the sustainable & economic development of infrastructure. 

As an accredited testing laboratory, we also strive to continuously improve our testing methods & the service we provide in order to achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction.

Testing Services

The SML at the University of Miami is one of only six university laboratories in the United States accredited as a testing laboratory by International Accreditation Services (IAS) to perform International Code Council (ICC) compliance testing in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17025 standard. Our center is also accredited as an inspection body in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17020 standard.

Additionally, the SML conducts applied research which is fundamental to the growth of the industry through the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Integration of Composites into Infrastructure (CICI) and is accredited by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to conduct testing/evaluation of bearing pads per FM 5-598.

These accreditations demonstrate technical competence for a defined scope & the operation of a laboratory quality management system.
